DIY Laundry Detergent and DIY Fabric Softener

Anyone in the mood to save some money? I'm always in the mood for that! Today I made my own laundry detergent after finding this on Pinterest, however this is my version of it (and I'll tell you why).

I once did my parents a favor by letting a washing machine repair man into their home while they were away. Their washer had some technical problems along with a horrible oder and build up of, well, crap. As I talked to the repair man about the oder, he made it clear that people should never put fabric softener into their washing machines. It just keeps the dirt and grim stuck in the machine. Instead, everyone should add about 1 C of vinegar to every load. Vinegar acts the same as fabric softener, cleans your washing machine, and you don't have to worry about any bad smell, including the vinegar smell. I have been using vinegar in my laundry ever since and I can't tell you how much I love the stuff, and it's true, there is no vinegar smell.

DIY Laundry Detergent
Follow these directions BUT don't add the Purex Crystals Fabric Softener. You may say, "But I want that good smell that fabric softener adds!!!" Well just keep reading and I'll tell you how I get that good smell without adding fabric softener.

I saved my old laundry detergent containers just for this purpose. I had been planning on doing this project for a while now. Just rinse them out really well and make sure they are completely dry before you fill them with DIY laundry detergent.

DIY Fabric Softener
Add 1 C of vinegar for every large load of laundry (less for less laundry, just estimate). Like I said, this stuff works better than fabric softener and keeps your machine in great condition. No vinegar smell either.

Wonderful Clean Laundry Smell - Smells Like Fabric Softener (Optional)
I like to sprinkle in a few of these to really pump up the smell of my clean laundry. Without fabric softener, you don't really get that wonderful clean laundry smell that we all love so much. These do the trick.

  1. I'm going to try this with Scentsy Washer Whiffs. Smells like fabric softener, but not fabric softener. Just adds a great scent! Thanks for the idea!
